Dialects in the Classroom


Throughout history there have been many arguments about what to do with dialect variation in the school setting. We do not expect this trend to stop in our lifetimes, yet we hope that a modern understanding of how language works will help parents, students, and educational professionals find common ground. Through a modern view of language, we can develop better language education.

Attached is a two-week-long unit plan on American Dialects. This unit focuses on helping students to look past the stereotypes associated with a person’s speech and to appreciate cultural differences.

This Unit uses a variety of sources, including a dialect map of America and the International Dialect Archive, as well as a variety of books, poems, and short stories.
